Biofiltration is an environmentally friendly technology that utilizes microbial metabolism to degrade and eliminate odorous gases. The core principle involves the use of microorganisms attached to packing materials, which utilize odor-causing pollutants as nutrients. These pollutants are metabolized and ultimately converted into harmless inorganic substances such as carbon dioxide, water, and sulfates.
System Components and Working Process:
A complete biofiltration system typically includes the following components:Odor gas collection unit, Pre-treatment unit, Biofilter (reactor), Purified gas discharge system. The detailed operation process is as follows:
Gas Collection and Pre-Treatment: Odorous gases are first collected and directed into a pre-treatment unit. Here, the gases may undergo washing or humidification to adjust humidity and remove some water-soluble contaminants, creating favorable conditions for subsequent biological degradation.
Biological Filtration and Degradation: The humidified gas enters the biofilter, where it passes through the packing material along with recirculating liquid. Three key processes occur simultaneously:
Gas-Liquid Mass Transfer: Odorous compounds dissolve into the liquid phase;
Liquid-Solid Diffusion: Dissolved pollutants diffuse toward the biofilm surface;
Biological Oxidation: Microorganisms within the biofilm metabolize the pollutants, converting them into CO₂, H₂O, and other simple inorganic compounds.
Recirculation and Sludge Management: The recirculating liquid contains detached biofilm and microbial byproducts. It is filtered and replenished with fresh wash solution before being reused. A small amount of excess biomass is periodically discharged as sludge.
